13th Marines

The 13th Marine Regiment was activated on 3 July 1918 as an infantry regiment. The Regiment was under the command of Colonel Smedley Buttler. On 1 September 1919, the regiment was deactivated.

On 11 December 1943, the regiment was reactivated and redesignated an artillery regiment. The 13th Marines played an important role in securing Iwo Jima. 6 February 1946, the regiment was again deactivated.

In May 1966, 1st Battalion was reactivated and departed to Vietnam with RLT 26. June - October 1966, the Regimental Headquarters, 2nd Battalion, and 4th Battalion were reactivated and commenced an extensive training program. In January 1967, the 3rd Battalion was reactivate.
2nd and 4th Battalion were deployed to Vietnam in early 1967 along the DMZ. At the turn of the New Year, 1968, Kilo 4/13 was located at C2 between Cam Lo and Con Thien. The Battery stayed in this fire base until August 1968. At that time the Battery was deployed to Phu Bai via LST’s up the perfume river to Hue. Kilo 4/13 stayed in the Phu Bai area supporting both Marine units and the 101st during operation Nevada Eagle. In November 1968 the unit moved to An Hoa via Da Nang. While in An Hoa the Battalion drove into the Antenna Valley and shot support for operation Taylor Common. The Unit was then moved to Hill 10, LZ Ross, before being deactivated on 15 October 1970.

The Regiment remains deactivated to this day.

Significant Enagements

During World War II, the 4th Battalion 13th Marines were part of the order of battle that took the island of Iwo Jima.

During the Viet Nam war the 4th Battalion 13th Marines participated in the following operations:

1967

Command Chronologies 1/13, 4/12, and 1/12 and Kilo Battery

According to the Command Chronology for HQ, 1^st Bn, 13^th Marines (1/13) for January 1967, Kilo 4/13 was listed as a subordinate unit located on Okinawa. Capt Duncan Jones was listed as the K/4/13 Commander until January 27^th,when Jay Evans assumed command.

On Jan 1^st, the Battalion Cmdr, LtCol R.L.Christian, two officers and 33 enlisted were TAD to the Special Landing Force as FDC personnel for Deckhouse 5. (This was what Herb was talking about in his email. [Incidentally, I was on Deckhouse 3 and 4 with A Btry 1/13 the previous summer as an FO]).

On February 20^th the advanced party for Kilo’s FireEx at Fuji departed (I guess this included you, Tase?). On the 23^rd, the battery embarked to Fuji for the scheduled 17 day exercise.

The March Cmd. Chronologies for 1/13 said LtCol Christian visited Kilo’s FireEx at Fuji with the Battery undergoing day and night training and achieved a C-1 rating. (I assume that’s good, with the C standing for “Combat”-1 rating, and not a “Gentleman’s” “C”.). The report says that Kilo Btry returned to Okinawa on 10 March. It goes on to say that on 24 March, Jay Evans went TAD to HQ 3^rd Division and Kilo Btry 4/12 in regards to proposed replacement of K/4/12 with K/4/13. He returned on 30 March.

In April, the Cmd. Chronologies said that on 16 April, Jay Evans and the advanced party departed for Vietnam with the rest of the Battery departing on the 19^th.

At that point, I went to the 4/12 Command Chronologies for Kilo Btry information. 4/12 had administrative control for the Battery in Vietnam. (Incidently, LtCol Duncan Jones, the old Kilo Battery CO was listed as the 4/12 CO). It had Capt. Dave Cadiz as CO of K/4/12, the battery that we replaced. (I knew Dave later in 29 Palms. He wound up his WestPac tour as the asst. S-3 of 1/13 at the siege of Khe San.) The 4/12 report says that on “30 April, K/4/12 rotated to Okinawa and was replaced by K/4/13”.

I looked at the May Cmd Chronology for 1/13 and they list Cadiz’s Btry in Okinawa as “K”Btry 4/13, with parenthesis on the “K”. The report said that battery was redesignated as “4/13” on arrival in Okinawa. So the belief that we assumed their K/4/12 designation in Vietnam was wide spread.

The May Cmd. Chronology of 4/12 states that on “6 May, K/4/13 was redesignated K/4/12 “resulting from the transplacement of the two batteries”.

Going along with this, the May Cmd Chronology for 2/12 to which had operational control of the battery in Vietnam called us “K/4/12”.

The June Chronology for 4/12, however starts calling us K/4/13 without explanation for the change. Opposing this, the June Chronology for 2/12 continues to call us K/4/12, even though, the June Chronology for 1/13 on Okinawa now calls Cadiz’s Battery K/4/12.

The July Cmd Chronology for 1/13 states that 1/13 and all units except K/4/12 embarked for Vietnam.

The July Cmd. Chronology for 2/12 finally calls our Battery K/4/13. Also, my old CO of A/1/13, Richard Bailey (no relations Tase?) is now the S-3 of 2/12 at our location at Dong Ha.

The August Cmd Chronology for 2/12 gives the date of August 3, 1967 for the change of command from Jay Evans to Frank Bendrick.
