130mm Gun Delay Shell Crater
NVA 130mm Guns fired on us at C2. Some rounds were on delay and some were on contact. This one landed about 15 yards behind my gun, gun3. Another went off under my gun and raised us about 12 inches off the ground. The gun, an M109SP weighed about 23 tons. The next picture shows what would have happened if it had been set to go off on contact. |

Shell Crater Hit Next to FDC, C2
This round was set for contact. If it was set for delay, it would have gone off inside FDC and killed everyone inside. When the round went off under my gun, gun3 top right, we were told that we were out of commision and were to abandon the gun. We ran from our gun down the hill to our crew bunker to the left of the FDC bunker. When I came around the corner, I saw this crater, 10 to 12 feet across. I jumped it in one leap. The adrenaline was still pumping because the rounds were still falling. Soon after it was determined that the gun was not out of action and we had to make the run back in the oppsite direction. Oh what a day. |
